Slugs not automatically redirecting after change (2 posts)

I've seen some topics discussing how WordPress automatically updates the links to pages after choosing a different slug. For some reason my site is not doing that at all.

I had the blog originally on "Numeric", but now it is on "Date and name based". Google indexed my website before the change and so still links to the original addresses of the pages. As far as I know, WP should redirect those to the new pages - but its not. It's just giving 404s.

I just started using the "Redirect" plugin, but I have to manually change all the 404s - that's a lot...very time-consuming work. This is obviously not the ideal solution. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this, what might be wrong, or where to start?

For example, here is an old link:
    http://www.pinkonbrown.org/archives/15
This should be pointing to this post:

But its not. I just get the darn 404.
