slugs and URL (5 posts)

    Hi,

I have created a number of posts, some saved as ‘draft’, some saved as ‘published. I have an ‘under construction’ block plugin activated.

I selected permalinks to appear as http://www.mywebsite.org/sample-post/. Until now I have allowed each post to generate the URL automatically from the post title. For example: http://www.mywebsite.org/my-grans-great-chicken-soup-recipe/.

I have now tried to edit the slug to make the URL good for SEO but am getting URLs that look like this: http://www.mywebsite.org/chicken-soup/?p=1724&preview=true or like this: http://www.mywebsite.org/?p=1724&preview=true

Any ideas why? Is it just that the database needs time to up date, or is it a setting?

    Feed back welcome.
    Thanks

In general, you should not edit permalinks as this will almost certainly create problems for you. As it is, you are only previewing pages. The final urls will not be used until the pages are published.

    Hi,
    You are right.

The URLs (permalinks) are now coming in correct 'pretty' form but only if I publish the page. If I save in draft the URL is in default form.

    This is ok.
So it was just a database resetting, time lapse thing, I guess.

I will take your advice and leave the URLs as auto generated.

    Thanks

On the other hand Esmi - why is the edit:slug feature there, if not to edit the permalinks?

It's there for the odd times when you need to make a minor change. For example, you misspelt the title, corrected it and now want to fix the spelling in the permalink. Just don't use it frequently or for SEO. There are plugins you can use for SEO.
