This just happened to my site as well, most notably after the immense downtime we experienced yesterday. It probably is a server thing, but nothing else takes nearly that long. That, coupled with slow posting of entries, is really annoying me. It’s weird how it’s all of a sudden too…
I can view the post on my page before WordPress finishes doing its thing o_O
I’ve been battling with this for a very long time, and tried a variety of things. Even turning off pings and comments on my test site. Still long processing times. Even the occassional time out, and then everything will run speedy and then slow down again.
I think it has to do more with the speed of your host, host activity, and Internet activity slowing things down than anything WordPress is doing. But the bigger the posts, the longer the waits.
I’m sure I whined enough a month ago that the developers are still buzzing around the ears with it, and with 1.5 things are faster.
I’m having the same problem with slow posts. I have a dedicated server, 3ghz P4 with 768meg ram. Only thing going on is WordPress and MySQL. It’s not theme related because I tried several different themes. This is unacceptable 🙁

A followup: I unchecked Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.) ” on the Options/Discussion page and it is blazingly fast now.

For those of you having this problem I’d like you to tell me what server platform you’re running. Is MySQL on Windows or is it a Linux/Unix/FreeBSD/Darwin server?
I have a friend who is currently running a Windows 2000 server with current Service Packs and MySQL 5. I’m running a Linux server with MySQL 5. He has slow responses back on comments. I do not.

How many Update services is he pinging ?
