It could be related to your WordPress version, certain active plugins, the number of installed plugins, DashBoard hacks, WordPress hacks, server speed, MySQL version, PHP version, server security measures, and general hosting issues.
Thanks macmanx, I’m currently using WP 1.5: I’m experiencing this slowdown after installing Bad Behaviour (the only change to my installed plugins); but I’m not sure this is the real cause. Recently I had some troubles with my hosting provider, in terms of sudden downtimes. I wrote about it in another post…

Just to make sure that older versions aren’t the cause, please upgrade to WP v1.5.1.3. And, please make sure that you are running Bad Behavior v1.1.4.
I’m using Bad Behaviour 1.1.4. I also noticed that accessing wp-admin via the “edit” function of a post makes the loading of the dashboard extremely quick, whereas accessing to it via the “site admin” link on the sidebar makes the access extremely slow.
Exact same issues here. If I go to the admin via “edit” it’s fast, but then when I click “dashboard” or go to the dashboard via the “site admin” link, it’s super slow (taking like 30 seconds for me).
Is something in the dashboard news feed slowing it down?
Running 1.5.1.3 and no new plugins installed around the time this issue started popping up.
My guess its the RSS feeds slowing it down. I had that issue too so I decided to remove them complely using the Dashboard options plugin:

You can use my Dashboard hack to super speed your Dashboard. It improves unpon the Dashboard functionality but excludes the RSS feeds which slows down your Dashboard considerably.
Both look like good solutions, and while it may be slow for many, it seems like there are only a few people having this extreme delay (it takes me 30 seconds to hit the main admin page).
There’s gotta be some issue specific to us, no? I cant think of anything I did recently (the page isn’t even active yet) except for upgrading to 1.5.1.3 and I followed the wiki — everything else works.
Thanks!
