I'm building a magazine/newspaper theme for a client and one of the main features requested was an image slideshow akin to the one at USAToday.com. I've tried NextGEN gallery and numerous other plugins but none seem to be able to take images directly from the uploads folder and incorporate them into a slideshow. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Doing slideshows directly from the uploads folder is a bit tricky. You might think about using Soundslides, which creates flash-based slideshows. Then you can upload the presentation with something like this http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/soj-soundslides/.

The Random Image Plugin (near the bottom of the list) does exactly what I need; I can create an unordered list from all the images taken directly from their posts, and I can just apply as much JQuery and Javascript as I want on top to make it work. Thanks so much for your help.
