NextGEN Gallery Optimizer
[resolved] slideshow broken on activation of premium version (3 posts)

Greetings -- This may be a jQuery issue with our theme, but up to now we've used the (ugly) Flash version of NextGen slideshows to enable display of captions and automatic resizing; see e.g. here. When I enable NextGEN Gallery Optimizer Premium and uncheck "Enable flash slideshow" under Gallery > Options > Slideshow, I get the dreaded spinning loading circle as mentioned in your FAQ, though when I disable your plugin I get the (basic) slideshow back. I've checked and all thumbnails in the test gallery look just fine, and have checked other postings re. slideshows in your support forum and no related clues. Currently you won't see the behavior as I've re-enabled the Flash view, but if you'd like to view it let me know and I'll temporarily disable.

    Many thanks,

    Jim P.

Okay, I've tested on a different theme and it looks like indeed there may be a conflict with the Striking theme (or other code, e.g. in widgets) we use on the above site. On the sge.lclark.edu/dfs site, I can enable Optimizer Premium and disable the Flash slideshows, and the basic slideshow does work, thus this may be a jQuery issue on the Striking-based site.

But this raises a related question: as of yet I see no difference from the basic slideshow, even though "Use Fancybox lightbox effect?" is enabled in Optimizer Premium settings. (I have not yet started to customize code to enable auto-advance.) Is there something I'm missing? I'm using standard NextGen slideshow shortcode.

    Many thanks,

    Jim P.

    Hi Jim,

That's great to hear you've pinpointed the issue! It does indeed look like a jQuery conflict, as your theme appears to have a jQuery call hard-coded into the header. This will break most jQuery-based plugins that load the library the WordPress way, as hard-coding it causes duplication.

In regards to the slideshow...the "Use Fancybox lightbox effect?" option in Optimizer is for the display of gallery images in the Fancybox lightbox. The code I sent through earlier via email will auto-advance this display to simulate a slideshow effect, but you'll need to use a gallery shortcode (eg. [nggallery id=x]) to load the images and lightbox functionality.

    I hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Mark.
