    Hi, Never really had any luck with the built in slider as it shows only post images etc? So I installed "Meteor slides" and it works well. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/meteor-slides/
    Simply install it as a plugin, then set the size etc in slider settings. Best to include the function code in the header section in EDITOR, I know best would be achild theme but it is more complicated. I edited the Header to include meteor slides. Go to APPEARANCE >> EDITOR .. Find the HEADER.PHP and remove the "slider code there. Then add after </nav><!-- #access --> :

    <?php if ( function_exists( 'meteor_slideshow' ) ) { meteor_slideshow(); } ?>

    BEFORE:
    </header><!-- #header -->`
    Read the documentation and you can do quiet a bit with this.
    Have a look at my site that I used meteor slides on, I wanted to create my own slides and links independent from posts etc.. http://www.artandcraftconnection.com/
    Good luck, Groggo

    Thanks Paul, great tutorial! I am sure it will help people. I love your website! I understand how the slider works. I needed more functionality than the native Pinboard slider offers. That's why I installed another slider, meteor slides. It's compatible with Pinboard. The main reasons:
    1. I wanted my slider images on top to be able to click through to any URL on my site or external.
    2. I wanted to use the STICKY function to keep certain selected posts on top of the category grid (this ability is lost once one activates the Pinboard slider)
    3. I wanted to use totally different, and much larger images in the slider that I use in the posts, which is impossible with the Pinboard slider. Now I can use ANY images, include any URL or do anything I like.. how cool is that?
    Otherwise I like the Pinboard theme. It's stable, easy to configure and use, and it looks ok.
    Hope this is of help to anyone, check out what i did with Pinboard and Meteor sliders combined: http://www.artandcraftconnection.com/ , enjoy, Groggo
