slide show doesn't work …just stacks the images

followed the installation instructions. have the plugin loaded and activated, have the code <?php wp_cycle(); ?> placed inside the Div where I want it to appear. The images don’t display in a slide show, they just stack on top of each other. I feel like there’s some other code or step I’m missing. I’m using a custom html page layout I adapted for wordpress
