    @Ron

The site is notre.co .. The red label on the images is the category.. The post is put in the right category, but a extra category is created with a number.. And the post is not put in the newly created category.

So i have a lot of categories with no posts in.

i've attached a image how my category admin page looks like.
    As you can see, fashion-2 ..3 ..4 ..5

by the way, i'm running selfhosted wordpress 3.1

You have to be running selfhosted WP to use SWT. The change I made last weekend was only tested on WP 3.2.1, so I don't know if it addresses the issue in 3.1.

Go into your database admin tool and look for a row where the meta_key is global_terms_enabled. Is the meta_value a 0 or 1?

Sorry, forgot to include the table to look in: wp_sitemeta.

I hadn't tested it with global_terms_enabled on. Since yours is off then that's not the issue.

What other plugins do you have installed? Also, when do you plan to upgrade to a more recent version of WP?

I meant on the source blog of the post, network activated or installed in the mu-plugins folder.

It doesn't matter what plugins are active on the tags blog because that isn't the active blog when the post is being saved. When WP does the internal blog context switch it does not load the theme or plugins of the blog it switches to.

Well.. notre.co has 47 blogs activated.. And what plugins they run is hard to know.

But the complete lists if it helps:

I think you'll have to spend a bit of time to track some the extra categories back to a specific site so that you can cut down the list of plugins a bit.

There are probably a few you can rule out

    - Akismet - lots of people use this and it only interacts with comments
    - Custom CSS - doesn't use taxonomies
    - Bad behavior
    - Disqus - I haven't used this one but I assume it uses similar hooks to Akismet

    hi Ron,

There is no extra categories on the blogs where the posts come from! The categories on the other network blogs have the same category name and slug..

    Do you mean something else?

I wasn't expecting that there would be.

If you have new extra categories show up, look at the new posts in the tags blog to determine which site the extra categories came from.

I'm having the same problem...mostly with the same few categories. I can't find anything unique about the blogs the posts are coming from (I'm in a school, so we're talking all student blogs). Could the More Privacy Options plugin be the culprit?

The plugins I have installed network-wide are:

    Iframe
    Viper's Video Quicktags
    WP Smush It
    SlideShare Embeds
    More Privacy Options

The ones I have available to the network (but not automatically activated):

    Akismet
    All-in-One Event Calendar Plugin
    Bad Behavior
    Breadcrumb NavXT
    Configure SMTP
Google XML Sitemaps with Multisite support
    jQuery Collapse-O-Matic
    Login Logo
    Newsletter
    NextGEN Gallery
    NextGEN Monoslideshow
    Optimize DB
    Post Types Order
    Slickr Flickr
    WordPress Importer
    WordPress NextGen GalleryView
    WPaudio
    WP Events Calendar

A-Ha! I posted to a network blog, and my tags blog made 8 copies of one of the categories.

This particular post was assigned 9 categories and only the last category was replicated...8 replicas with 0 posts and one with the new post in it.

Update: I was able to repeat it. It happens when a post has more than one category assigned to it. This time I assigned 4 categories to the post, and only the last one was replicated, and only once.

Notes: doesn't seem to replicate categories where the name starts with a number? I have 10th grade, 11th grade, etc...these don't get replicated. If I assign 2 categories and both are non-numerical...they both get replicated.

Conclusion I'm drawing: When there is more than one category assigned to a post, each category will be replicated...the number of times depending on the number of other categories assigned to that post. Numeric categories are not replicated.

I hope this helps in some way! Email me at jcross@eastsideprep.org if you want me to try and explain better...

@nearlyjen - thank you for the troubleshooting. Having a reliable process to reproduce the issue is awesome.

I tried to duplicate this and could not. I tried 3 categories, 9 categories. None of my categories start with a number.

Are you sure you have updated to the latest development version?

Yes, definitely using the development version and definitely getting empty categories as described.

Can you try it with no plugins active other that SWT on the source blog & either twenty ten or twenty eleven as the active theme?

@nearlyjen - do the categories getting duplicated have parent categories in the tags blog?

I too am experiencing duplicate (but fortunately empty) categories being created in the tags blog. I'm using SWT v0.4.1.1 and WP 3.2.1.

In reference to the questions above, my posts have multiple categories assigned, and the categories have parent categories in the tags blog, and all categories assigned to the post(s) from within the source blog are being duplicated in the tags blog.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

The development version has quite a few changes related to the duplicate category issue.

I was asking @nearlyjen those questions because she was using the development version.

Just curious - why do your categories have parents in the tags blog? SWT does not assign parents to any categories that it creates.

By assigning a parent to a category in the tags blog you are effectively telling SWT that the category is not one it created. SWT will try to create another category instead of using the one that has a parent.

Just curious - why do your categories have parents in the tags blog? SWT does not assign parents to any categories that it creates.

The categories being copied over by SWT from the source site's posts were all on the same level when viewed on the tags blog, so I edited them to match the hierarchy of the source's categories. Does SWT intentionally not preserve category hierarchies?

To be clear, in my case, SWT is indeed placing the posts in the hierarchical categories, but is also creating duplicate (empty) categories on the root level.

@nearlyjen - Same to you. Thanks for letting me know :) I think I've found another situation where duplicates might be created, but I haven't had a chance to investigate yet.

Does SWT intentionally not preserve category hierarchies?

Yes, that's intentional. If one site has a category "Apple" with the parent Technology and another has a category "Apple" with the parent Fruit it cannot be assigned both categories as a parent in the tags blog. Having no category parents is the only reasonable way of addressing that type of conflict.

    Hi Ron,

No, the duplicated categories do not have parents in the tags blog.

    We are at:

and yesterday I had the category "Assessment" replicated six times. If it would help for me to make a temp admin acct for you, just email me.

    @nearlyjen - Thanks :)

If you check the tags blog the category name is assessment. The source blog has Assessment. So, I'm fairly sure what is triggering it is a case difference with otherwise identical categories.

Ah...just tested it. Renamed tags blog to match source blog and then reposted to multiple categories including Assessment. No duplicates.

Also tested on the site I had previously told you about, and it is no longer duplicating BUT I didn't need to correct any category names.

Regardless, all is well and I think you so much for your hard work.

Awesome :) I'll see if I can track what's causing that down this weekend.
