We have WP network/multisite (not sure which it is called now). periodically different sites will be taken offline by some unknown program and marked as spam on the network dashboard - they are highlighted in pink. They do not show a spam in Akismet. There is no spam on the sites. We have no idea why this is happening. Deactivating plugins will not work because we have no idea when it will happen again. It has happened 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Any ideas?

Akismet doesn't mark SITES as spam.

    What plugins are you running?

These are the plugins we are using. All latest versions.

I would speculate on BuddyPress Moderation being the culprit. It's the only thing I know of that changes the status of posts etc which MIGHT be the cause.

But yeah, this is probably a plugin issue, and you're going to have to try disabling them :/

    BuddyPress Moderation

If a user is marked as spam, then any sites they are tied to will also be marked as spam.

Ahhhh!! That answers it. I'd marked a user as spam but had not removed them from each of the subdomain sites yet. Thank you!

Interesting. It should only do that if the're the blog ADMIN, though, shouldn't it, Andrea?

It should, yes. but she's also using Multisite User Management which could have buggered that up.

Ah ha! So glad I found this thread, I at least know I'm not crazy. I'm having the same issue with using the multisite user management plugin. This is the culprit, right?

So what do I need to do to prevent this from happening? Stop using the plugin, and find an alternative? Or, do I need to deal with spam users in a different way?

I guess I don't quite follow why marking certain users as spam, marks affiliated sites on the network as spam too...
