   I am confused per the instructions of the Google XML plugin on where to put the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz files? Do I just create it while I am logged into my hosts public html section? Am I just creating this files and the plug in is writing to them when I activate the plug in?

   You do not have to create anything. Activate the plugin and it will create an .xml file and a .gz file everytime you make a post.
