sitemap… Simple question..?

Hoping somebody might explain this…
I can go to www.(my site).com/sitemap_index.xml, and it is there. Google webmaster tools says it is there and no problems…
But I cannot see it in my site’s directory…
Why…? What is happening…?
I’ve searched everywhere for an answer to this simple question…
