Support » Fixing WordPress » Site not displaying (Error 500) after ftp sync

  • Hello all,

Since ftp syncing my site with my local site, my website has not displayed, with Chrome displaying:

‘The website encountered an error while retrieving http://www.physoc.org.uk/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Error code: 500′

I know its still there since if I write in the direct url of an image I can find it (here
for example). I cannot access wordpress admin panel either.

Please could you offer suggestions as what the problem could be.

    Many thanks,

    Tom

Perhaps I will have to do a reinstall of wordpress and then upload my theme. But how do I save the database content?

    Cheers

    Hello Physoc,

If your web host allows you to backup your database from within your hosting panel, that would be the smoothest and simplest for you.
Or else, they ought to offer you phpmyadmin access, and that would also allow to backup your DB.

    More info here : http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database

Otherwise, rather than syncing, can you simply FTP upload the contents of the wordpress.zip file provided by wordpress.org, to your hosting account ? Beforehand, remove the contents of (root folder), save the wp-config file and .htaccess file, as well as (root folder)/wp-admin/ and (root folder)/wp-includes/

Or else you can try to manually delete all plugins (by FTP, rename root folder/wp-content/plugins to plugins.hold, it will auto-deactivate all of them), or switch to the default theme (by FTP, rename root/wp-content/themes/current_theme_you_use to current_theme_you_use.hold)

    Maybe it will work…
