I am new to using this so please forgive me if I'm asking a silly question but I want to include a sitemap for my site as I understand this is sensible for SEO work. Is this something I have to create or is there a plug in or way of creating it through WordPress?

You can choose a sitemap plugin from here.
Just follow the instuctions of the documentation. (Discreption, installation, etc.)
