Site is rejecting all theme CSS (18 posts)

    Exhibit A: http://www.hillarydepiano.com

    I would really appreciate some help with this one. I have 5 blogs with WordPress so I relatively know what I am doing but this is really stumping me.

    I logged into my blog yesterday to edit a page and saw what you see above. I assumed I must have deleted my CSS file or something. Nope, it was fine. I tried to switch to the classic theme temporarily and that looks pretty much the same way (the format is there, but none of the theme colors or other elements). I downloaded a totally new theme to try it out and I get the exact same thing.

    Even in the review window under the Design tab, all the previews come out this same way.

    The problem would seem obvious, my site is, for some reason, rejecting the CSS on each of these themes. But, how? Why? I didn't even do anything (I've been on vacation so this site was untouched for a while) so I'm not sure what I might have even done wrong.

    I just upgraded to the most recent version of wordpress and it still looks the same so I am at a loss and at your mercy.

    You have this in your header:

    <style type="text/css" media="screen">
    		@import url( http://www.hillarydepiano.com/pages/wp-content/themes/HDblogtemplate/style.css );
    	</style>

    However, the stylesheet is not there. And it is not there at the URL without the "pages/" portion either.

    So, where is your theme?

    moshu, That's the weird part. That is where it is! That was the very first thing that I checked. It's sitting right there happily in my ftp.

    I keep deleting the file and re-putting it to see if I can force WordPress to see it but its clearly not working.

    On top of this, the same behavior applies to all the themes I apply to this blog, not just the one I created myself.

    Permissions on folders/files?
    should be 755 for folders, 644 for files.

    OK, I have never checked that before, can you let me know where I can find that out?

    The problem started before I upgraded but we are on GoDaddy and we use their auto-update service. FYI, this is the same way we always upgrade (a few years now) and all my other blogs (which actually use the same theme as this blog slightly modified) are fine.

    It is the best time to get rid of bad habits... That automated gizmo just doesn't work properly.

    Try this:

    There isn't a file like that in our content folder. Is there another folder it might be in? The only .htaccess file in the entire site is in the main folder. I opened that file and everything is in order there.

    FYI, after the last update, which was quiet a while ago, our site has been working fine. It had a meltdown yesterday and after trying several other things we eventually upgraded to attempt to fix it. I am not ruling out that somehow the install broke it but it was broke weeks after one install (after working just fine in the meantime) and a day before another install so I am not convinced it ads up.

    Unless, of course, GoDaddy has a time machine I don't know about. :-)

    I don't know if this helps but my site files are all contained in the folder /pages/ as you saw above and the .htaccess and index are in the main folder. I did a check, however, and everything is how it should be for this so I don't think that is related either but I just wanted to mention it.

    <sigh> Why do we need 8 posts to find out the most important bits of info...?

    That technique (mentioned in the Codex in the Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory tutorial) requires that you have the index.php and the htacces in BOTH the root and the WP install dir (in your case "pages") - with the proper modifications to those in the root.

    What's funny is that I had copies of them in both places when it first broke and deleted the second copies in an effort to fix it.

    But, hey, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and again and expecting a different result so I just put them back for fun.

    But sadly, even adding them back in leave everything exactly the same as before.

    Are they the same in both directories or did you make the necessary changes to those placed into the root?

    I made the changes. Still nothing.

    On random plus is that thumbnails of themes are showing again, though nothing is working yet. But heck, at least that is some progress!

    What do you want with ctrl F5? Do you need a screenshot? Because that is not F5 on my keyboard. :-)

    ctrl f5 is to force a refresh meaning not pull the page from your browser cache.

    It works. On this end. Different browser - all of them.

    Ctrl+F5 = hard refresh in the browser. You are seeing cache not the real thing...

    Well that is awesome! Of course, it doesn't make a huge amount of sense since all we did was delete two files and them put them back again but, hey, who am I to question the mysterious workings of the internet gremlins! :-)

    Thanks for working with me, even if we never did get to figure out what was wrong! Thank you again!

    (One a side note, F5 on my computer is an open command. Maybe I just have a weird keyboard.)
