   I tried to auto update Akismet Plugin and now the site simply says

   "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute."

   I cannot get back to the dashboard.

   Can anyone help me figure this out? I am new to WP.

   - try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin. that way at least you can get in the admin area.

   using ftp and show hidden files there may be a hidden file .maintenance delete that file.
