I've just spent about three hours updating my site, knowingplaces.net, but I couldn't access one of my pages, called "Podcasts." It told me I couldn't access the page, because I needed needed to assign an index file. It still says it, check it out. So on my dashboard I clicked on Settings, then went to General, and tried changing my home site to knowingplaces.net/index.html, just to see what would happen. Nothing happened, so I changed it back to simply knowingplaces.net. Well what happened next was the formatting disappeared for my site and I can't access anything -- even my admin site's formatting is screwed up. I assigned a page's address to "index," but it's not "index.html." HELP! PLEASE! I need to get this online!

That's not a WordPress core message. It's your hosts.
so I changed it back to simply knowingplaces.net
Change the urls back. See Changing_The_Site_URL. Then try asking your hosts for assistance.
