Our site was running version 2.9.8 and we were told by a WordPress user that updating our site would improve and help our site functions when we did so.

We enacted the automatic update through the Dashboard and the site updated!

Everything seemed fine when we logged out and walked away.

However when we came back to login, all we got from our site was a blank white screen. This is the current status of our site.

We have tried http://www.bobcatbanner.com/wp-admin/ but that give usa white screen! It is like our site is completely wiped away!

    Our hosting company is GoDaddy.
    and our domain is http://www.bobcatbanner.com

Please click on the link and check for yourself.

We were running the theme Mystique if that helps.

Please help we are a school newspaper class that has regular users to our site and need this site back up ASAP.

    Thank you

I had a look, and I think you'll need to do some troubleshooting on this one. I've not seen this happen before. First, use an ftp client (like Filezilla) and rename all the plugins (add a dash or zero in front of each name) so that they are deactivated. Refresh your browser and see if that works to get you logged in.

First we need to see if we can get your website back using ftp go to wp-content/themes and rename Mystique theme you using to something Mystique-bak and then try and go to to your website this will force the default twentyten theme to open.

If your website opens then could be that theme is not compatible to wordpress 3.0

    Okay i went to

click on themes and you will see all your themes there You need to just rename the folder Mystique and ftp will let you rename the theme folder.

We can deactivate your plugins if renaming the theme does not work.

    @ Cathy Tibbles

The problem is there is nothing to log in to. Nothing. just a white screen.

Everything is still there on the ftp server though

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I dont trust appending a word - bak - to the file. I'd put it at the beginning of the word. Also, go ahead and rename the plugins now to see if they are causing the problem. That is at the wp-content/plugins/ directory. prepend -- to each name.

It does not matter as I have been renaming this way and have never had any problems. You do not need to do each plugin just the plugin directory will work the same.

Follow this steps to reset your plugins.

    Create an empty plugins folder

    * Via FTP wp-contents folder (directory)
    * Via FTP rename the folder "plugins" to "plugins.hold"
    * Via FTP create new folder called "plugins"
    * Login to your WordPress administration menus
    * Via FTP delete the empty "plugins" you previous created
    * Via FTP rename "plugins.hold" back to "plugins"

If this let you log in admin then may be plugins need updating as they might not be compatible to 3.0

    Okay.

    * Plug-ins folder has been renamed to "plugins.hold"
    * The mystique folder under "themes" has been renamed to "mystique-bak"

Still that white blank screen. :-(

ok looks like we need to rename .htaccess file I left this for last go ahead rename

    1. deleting/renaming your .htaccess. it's possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem.

    2. deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

We have already done this two steps.

    3. switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems? If you don't have access to your admin panel, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the Default theme (Twenty Ten theme) to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue

    4. resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Okay

1.) What do i rename the .htaccess to?

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don't forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    OMG success!!!

Im now. Thank you sooo much govpatel.

Just a few more questions. I logged in and i got these messages

"Warning! WordPress encrypts user cookies, but you must add the following lines to wp-config.php for it to be more secure.
Before the line /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */ please add this code:

    define( 'NONCE_SALT', '%B9%Wx:py(Ueh@icB3#o=gr8~G.:raxX)R@J1n(cg6O(WyOB9c/#6M#Cq<B{!%dd' );"

    and

"The wp-content/blogs.php file is deprecated. Please remove it and update your server rewrite rules to use wp-includes/ms-files.php instead."

What do i have to do to fix this? Especially the last one.

    Thanks!!!!
