Simple Tags – filter tag show_count to exclude a category

Hi, really hope someone can help!

I want to have a count of posts next to the tag list, which works fine, except that I need to expire posts after 30 days from the loop and have a script that automatically moves posts to a expired category after 30 days to achieve this with all loops and search set to exclude that category from results.

I used this filter in the st_the_tag call with 20 being the id of the category I am trying to exclude.

exclude=20&show_count=1

This does not work and counts all tags even on expired posts and therefore the count is wrong for the user. i.e. count says 8, whilst only 4 are returned in the loop.

Is there a solution for this? another way would be to remove tags from a post after X days maybe but I have no idea about doing this.
