simple page sidebar not appearing (7 posts)

I didn't set up the site and I can't seem to see where to find out which version I'm using. However it's asking me to update to 3.3.1 so I've estimated 3.3 as it was only set up a couple of weeks ago.

I've added the simple page sidebar widget and whilst I can get my main sidebar to appear in a page I can't get my custom sidebars to show.

Everything looks fine in the 'backend' but it simply won't show up in 'view'. However I don't really understand this instruction:

After installation, go to the Reading options panel (the Reading link under Settings) and choose the default sidebar.

I can change it to 'blank', main sidebar, show sidebar or 3 footers but not default or any of the sidebars I've created. I have also tried 'blank', main sidebar, show sidebar and none of them work.

    Can you help please?

    Thanks a lot

Try looking in your Dashboard. An estimate isn't really ideal and could cause you even more problems.

It is 3.3 - I had looked everywhere but under the 'Right Now' section. I'd been in Help on every page - every section in settings, everywhere.

I apologise for being so unobservant and I do realise it's difficult to deal with software queries when you don't know which version you are working with. I just honestly couldn't see it.

Also I thought I had ticked to receive emails when someone replied - but haven't received anything so far and there's nothing in my spam folder. Anyway I've ticked the box again to see what happens this time.

Thanks a lot - looking forward to getting some help about the sidebar issue.

as your username is linked to a wordpress.com site, and you haven't posted a link to a selfhosted site using wordpress.org, you might better ask at http://en.forums.wordpress.com/ if your problem is with your ?????.wordpress.com site.

or please post a link to your selfhosted site running wordpress.org.

    that site is based on Twenty Eleven;

start by creating a child theme http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

then look at using a plugin, for instance: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twenty-eleven-theme-extensions/

there is also a 'sidebar template' for pages which you could possibly use.

    -------------

I've added the simple page sidebar widget

how? what is a 'simple page sidebar widget'?

After installation, go to the Reading options panel (the Reading link under Settings) and choose the default sidebar.

I can change it to 'blank', main sidebar, show sidebar or 3 footers but not default or any of the sidebars I've created. I have also tried 'blank', main sidebar, show sidebar and none of them work.

these options are not from the Twenty Eleven theme, and basically don't make any sense to me.
the sidebar settings would be under dashboard - appearance - theme options
