[resolved] [closed] Sidebars aren't working on product pages (6 posts)

    WordPress version: 3.8.1
    Plugin version: 1.0 (Pro)
Link to my site: kwhranch.com (it is in maintenance mode and I would be happy to give you credentials but not publicly)

I expected the plugin to do this:

When looking at a product page, underneath the content editor you have a section to select a "sidebar". I created the sidebar per the directions, filled it with stuff in the "widgets" panel, and then returned to the product page to select my new sidebar for use. I chose it from the dropdown menu, updated the page, and no sidebar.

Here's what I've tried so far:
I checked the plugin theme files to ensure that it was pulling the sidebar or had some kind of function for the sidebar, and it doesn't -- so I'm not sure how it is supposed to happen. I also tried putting in some code to pull the sidebar myself and that didn't work either (<?php get_sidebar ('name of sidebar'); ?>).

The sidebar section in not part of the WP Catalogue plugin. It would have been added to the product admin page by your Theme.

The product pages do not support sidebars. This is to allow enough room for the product photos as well as the product category menu on the left hand side.

Yep @Steaders is dead right. The sidebar you're talking about is something coming from your theme. It is not recommended to use a page layout with a sidebar on your WP Catalogue pages because it would really not allow enough room for the Catalogue content and would throw off your layout in most cases.

If you really really really want to do it, you will need to assign the relevant Page Template for the main page of the catalogue (over to the right when editing a Page), then also use the Inner Page Header and Footer fields in the WP Catalogue settings to tell your site to use that Page Template for inner pages of the catalogue. If you do this, you'll also likely need to limit the number of thumbnails per row, and maybe do some css tweaks in your theme so that the WP Catalogue content fits nicely whilst using a second sidebar.

Oh and sorry one more tiny note... for Pro version support please use Pro forum over here in the future. ;-) Cheers.

    Hi Maeve,

I've had good success with your plugin but I'm stuck on one issue. I must have the sidebar in order to preserve some context for the user on my website. I've tried selecting the sidebar at the category level with no luck. Whatever I select is reset after saving.

I suspect that this is related to the fact that I'm using the StudioPress Genesis Framework with their Simple Sidebars plugin. I've created category specific sidebars that I need to incorporate on corresponding product and category pages. (I'm using PRO, so I have several pages pulling in product categories)

Have you, or has anyone, figured this out withing the Genesis framework?

I'm guessing it's as simple as putting genesis_do_nav() in the right place in one of the plugin files, but I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance if anyone has a solution to this issue!

    JB
