On my site, http://www.chapterlibrary.com how would I go about adding a skyscraper google adsense bar on the left side of my page while leaving my sidebar on the right and unaltered?

You don't have left sidebar. If you want stuff on both sides of your blog - get a 3 column theme.

Is there a way to modify the theme I have to be a 3 column theme? I like the look of it scheme wise.

There is always a way. But if you have to ask how to do it... then better don't try. Sorry. Practically, it means re-designing the theme.
