    I have the default theme set up. I've changed the header and now want to change the color on the sides of the main body (I guess that is what it should be called) to black instead of the grey it currently is.

    Hi

    On line 24 of style.css is

    body {
        background: url("images/kubrickbgcolor.jpg") repeat scroll 0 0 #D5D6D7;
     ...   { more stuff here } ...
    }

    change
    background: url("images/kubrickbgcolor.jpg") repeat scroll 0 0 #D5D6D7;
    to
    background: #000000;

    You will still have an issue with a thin grey frame around the content area because that is how the old default theme works. But get this part done first and then you can clean up that other part.
