this is proably really easy, i just can't find anything on the subject. i have some category links and i want to show the number of posts in each. for example:
show all (100) | websites (50) | banners (25) | offline (20) | music (5)
anyone have any suggestions?

If you use the Template Tag, wp_list_cats() you can use the optioncount=1 parameter to display the counts.
