Show last 3 post on index but in categories 12

    In the Administration Panel under settings/reading I can choose in the option “Blog pages show at most” the number of posts the index, categories and search sites will show.

    But I would like to have on the index and in the categories a different number of posts. My wordpress is set to “Frontpage displays” – Latest Posts.

    I would like to have on my index 3 posts but in the categories 12. Is there an line of code I can add to my index page that I will just get 3 posts without changing the number all the other pages show.?
