   Can somebody roughly explain how I might change home.php to have a page in the content area and blog overview in the sidebar? ...or at least point me to some useful widgets or codex functions that might accomplish this?

   I am looking to have a single blog category summarized in the sidebar just on that home page (ie - the sidebar shows a list of posts from a certain blog category along with the first few words).

   Seems my wordpress knowledge was outdated... no need to do anything special to use a Page as the home page. I just set the page I wanted to use for home under Settings > Reading... and then I used wp_get_archives() in the template for my sidebar.
