This plugin as shown here in the WP plugins repository is misleading and does not even do what is shown.

This is nothing more than bait and switch in collusion with WordPress. In the free version, nothing such as that is shown in the picture for the plugin works. You need to buy the PRO version.

This should not be allowed listed under the rules of the plugin repository bylaws. Or at least, the developer should change the picture of the plugin to show what is actually for free, so users can go find a free version elsewhere that does what is shown in the screenshots or choose to use the dumbed down version with actual photos of its free functionality

Which one of the detailed guidelines does this plugin not follow?

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/about/guidelines/

Or do you just don't like the verbiage on the plugin page?

    Hi Surfintica & Jan
Thank you for your feedback. The last thing we want to do is make users who download our plugin irate. We are a business and this plugin is our bread and butter so we'd like to be accommodating and change whatever is necessary for this to not be misleading.

As far as I'm aware we are not violating any plugin guidelines but I really do understand the concern with the images showing the functionality of the Pro version. We'll update the images to suit the free version.

Jan, is there anything on your side that is required to change?

    Kind regards
    Nick

  4. I really do understand the concern with the images showing the functionality of the Pro version.

I'm not on the plugins team (thankfully, that and the theme review team work hard!) but just as a suggestion you may want to add verbiage like "While the free version does x, y, and z if you upgrade to the pro version then you'll enjoy these additional features as well".

As far as I know upselling the premium version is fine as long as your free version does not violate the rules here. Making the distinction between the versions more clear may help.

    Just my opinion. ;)

    Thanks Jan

Agreed. This has also been the reason for some negative reviews lately so the sooner I make this more clear, the better for everyone.

I'll update the readme.txt file and the images ASAP.

    Thank you for your input!

    Kind regards
    Nick

Jan, use your own link you added to your comments and read Guideline 5

    It states within,

"All code hosted by WordPress.org servers must be free and fully-functional."

Clearly, the plugin is not fully functional and it's at best misleading.

Then there is this rule which is in the grey area but anyone with commons sense knows that this rule means no selling of your Pro Version on WordPress servers. Rule states

"All code hosted by WordPress.org servers must be free and fully-functional. If you want to sell advanced features for a plugin (such as a "pro" version), then you must sell and serve that code from your own site, we will not host it on our servers."

Other plugin developers simply put a link and text about their Pro Version and not disply Pro Version features as if the free plugin has them. It is dishonest and unworthy of being hosted on WordPress as the repository exists mostly on the goodwill of developers to follow its rules in a way that promotes WordPress Plugins repository.

A plugin that derives its source clients from WordPress, should behave in a better manner.

Finally, I am not sure what verbiage you are referring to that I do not like. I made no such mention of that.

Clearly, the plugin is not fully functional and it's at best misleading.

I actually spend way to much time reading the guidelines and at some point I expect the plugins team to shoot me an email saying "Enough already! You're really getting on our nerves!!" ;)

Raise your right hand and repeat after me: The plugin in the WordPress repository here works and is fully functional. It is not crippled at all and performs the functions listed.

See the part marked "Professional Edition"? The version here does not do those things and that should be clear to anyone reading it.

If you can find a listed feature of something that is intentionally disabled above the "Professional Edition" verbiage then please report it.

Then there is this rule which is in the grey area but anyone with commons sense knows that this rule means no selling of your Pro Version on WordPress servers.

No sorry, that's not correct at all. You're mixing "common sense" with "I don't like that".

The plugin author is not selling anything here. What the author is doing is informing the user that there exists another version (paid) that has additional features. That's permitted.

The requirements for having your plugin hosted here is well defined. Plugin authors are allowed to up sell the "premium" or "professional" version of their plugin provided that the version here meets the requirements.

So the plugin repo here is where plugin authors can sell the Pro version on WordPress servers?

You did not write that but I'm attempting to be proactive. ;)

There is a line between using the plugin page here only as an advertisement for your company. This plugin does not cross that line.

Finally, I am not sure what verbiage you are referring to that I do not like. I made no such mention of that.

That was a suggestion from me to the plugin author. Did you miss the exchange between myself and WPGMaps?

What the plugin author has agreed to do is update the plugin description so that it is more apparent what the version here comes with and what the "professional" version comes with.

    Hi,

I sent a support question a couple of days ago using the form on your site, with some specific questions that have not been answered. I have bought the premium version of this plugin and feel that it still is not meeting my expectations. Please look through your support cases and give me a reply.

My questions were about translation issues, being able to only show 5 markers below the map and being able to remove the category column.

    /Mats
