I want to shorten the displayed entries on my blogs index page as opposed to showing the entire entry. Can anyone point me to anything that will help me do that?

Several methods:
1. Use the --MORE-- function to keep your posts short. This allows you specify an exact cut off point, but means you need to do it manually each time.
2. Use the_excerpt call instead of the the_content, but this drops all formatting and keeps the words to a cut off point of exactly 120.
3. Use Kafkaesqui's Excerpt Reloaded plugin which provides more flexibility with the amount of words and formatting.
