Setting up DNS for my multiblogs (7 posts)

    Hi

I am having problems getting my network sites set up.
( sorry for the long post, but it mat help others as well )

The multisite is up and running but even though I have read the articles about the DNS and Name servers, I am not sure about what I should do in my circumstance.

I use a dedicated server with its own name-server set up.

There are about 20 other websites on the server which are unrelated to
this new Blog Network. These other 20 domains point at
ns1.myserver.com and ns2.myserver.com from their own domain registers
( myserver.com is an existing website on my dedicated server )

The new domain for my network is registered at Cheapdomain.com

Lets say my new Multisite domain is called My-network.com and the domain is pointed at my own nameserver
    ns1.myserver.com and ns2.myserver.com

So I have now just registered 2 new domains at Cheapdomains.com
called "my-blog-site-1.com" and "my-blog-site-2.com" and want to
have them running as blogs on my Network.

Now with Cheapdomains, they set up my nameserver like this:

    Nameservers
    Nameservers: (Last update 12/12/2011)
    NS73.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
    NS74.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

    And DNS :

    DNS Manager
    DNS Manager: Available
    A @ 64.202.189.170
    CNAME e email.secureserver.net
    CNAME email email.secureserver.net
    CNAME ftp @
    MX @ mailstore1.secureserver.net
    MX @ smtp.secureserver.net

So for my new blog site "my-blog-site-1.com"
maybe I should not use my own server nameserver but
leave it as NS73.DOMAINCONTROL.COM and NS74.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
and just change the details in the DNS Manager ??

I can add records to the DNS as well if necessary.

Here is a picture of the DNS Manager
    ( I had to take 2 screen shots )

    Can you please help,
What should I change in the DNS Manager.

    Thanks

    Hi again.

If anyone can help out, I would really appreciate it :)

I hope that I am right in thinking I can use the Cheapdomains.com
DNS manager - because that way I will not have to create a virtual server account for the "my-blog-site-1.com" webpage on my server.

Instead I can just point from the Domain register to the blog on new Multisite Network at My-network.com

Also - I have just upgraded to the latest 3.3 version.

Please let me know how I should proceed.

    Thanks.

Seriously, don't bump. It ruins the magic of the "no replies" link.

After re-reading this lengthy post it seems like you want to have your multisite run on multiple domains and host names.

    That's fine as long as

    1. Your web server will recognize all of those domains and host names and will send the request to the right Apache vhost and

    2. The DNS A records or CNAME records get to the right IP address of your server.

    3. You've set up the domain mapping plugin to alias those server names to your multi site installation.

As you can tell, multi site can be a little daunting but once you've met all three requirements you should be fine.

    Hi,

Thanks for reading my long post :)

After re-reading this lengthy post it seems like you want to have your multisite run on multiple domains and host names.

Well - yes, I do want the Multisite to run with multiple domains, but not sure about on multiple hosts - I don't think so.

I have installed one WP multisite ver 3.3 on My-network.com which is on my dedicated server.

I have added the domain mapping plugin following the tutorials and it appears to work fine. Its just that I couldn't understand what I need to do with CNAME records

I am trying to link newly registered domains to the Multisite website ( My-network.com ) in the correct way.

But I am not sure how to do this.

    The newly registered domain "my-blog-site-1.com"
has the DNS Manager as I showed above.

    Thanks for any more explanation.

  5. but not sure about on multiple hosts - I don't think so.

No no, that's one single host but multiple virtual hosts. If your web server properly answers for all requests then it probably doesn't matter.

I have added the domain mapping plugin following the tutorials and it appears to work fine.

That's good. That can be a tricky one to setup.

I am trying to link newly registered domains to the Multisite website ( My-network.com ) in the correct way.

The address resolution for My-network.com needs to get back to the multi-site server IP address. The DNS entry can be a CNAME or A record (wildcards work there too).

Does your newly registered domains point to the server IP address?

    Hi,
I'm the administrator and owner of the website http://www.bookinghotelin.com The domain was bought via godaddy.com. Most obviously my password at godaddy was recently hacked and due to it I lost my access to word press in order to administer my site. Can you please assist me and give me all the neccesery information's needed like: hosting code and everything needed to get the access to word press and continue to administer the site via word press?
My Current settings are as followed:

    DNS Manager: Available
    A @ 97.74.42.79
    A photos 208.109.80.29
    CNAME calendar login.secureserver.net
    CNAME email email.secureserver.net
    CNAME fax login.secureserver.net
    MX @ mailstore1.secureserver.net
    MX @ smtp.secureserver.net

    Nameservers: (Last update 2/5/2012)
    NS55.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
    NS56.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

Can you please give me guidelines
    Thank you in advance

    Best regards,

ljupcoc - Please make your own topic for these things.

And you need to contact godaddy directly for assistance.
