Setting "Show at most" to 0 breaks Pages? (8 posts)

..at least, that's what I appear to be seeing. More specifically:
    - I'm starting with a fresh 2.0.1 install
    - I'd like to display no posts at all
    - I'd like to create a couple of static pages

That's it. The most obvious method for doing this (to me, anyway) was to go into the admin panel Options->Reading and set Show at most __ posts to 0. This hides any and all blog posts, but when I try to view any Pages I get a 404. I've narrowed it down to this by changing (only) that setting between 0 and 1 and verifying that things don't work or work, respectively.

So my question: does the "Show at most" setting deal solely with blog posts, and has nothing to do with pages? And if that *is* correct, is this a bug? I tend to doubt it, but I don't know what to think at this point...

    TIA :)

Yes it is posts that the Show at most refers to.

Check out this Codex article Creating_a_Static_Front_Page.

Also note that the UNRELEASED IN TESTING version of WordPress, now called 2.1-alpha1, will allow you to specify a page as your 'main page'.

While the news about 2.1a is exciting, as is the tip on how to create a static front page (which I may well do), you didn't really address my second question: why would changing the "Show at most" setting effect whether or not I can view my Pages? I'm now really interested in what's up with this, since you have confirmed that the "Show at most" setting shouldn't be affecting Pages at all.

Guess you may need to Update your permalinks via Administration > Options > Permalinks.

Permalinks? Eh? My Pages work fine when the "Show at most" is set to some value >= 1, but not when "Show at most" is 0 -- why would this have something to do with my permalinks?

For the sake of completeness, I did just update my permalinks after changing the "Show at most" to 0 -- and it had no effect.

Okay, I get the same 404 error. You might want to report that at http://trac.wordpress.org/.

Hope I didn't frustrate you too much ;)

Roger that; I've submitted a ticket.

And no, not frustrating -- I'm just glad to be able to submit feedback!

  8. For your information there is now a patch available that should fix this issue.

Please give it a while and comment on it's sucess/failure for you in the trac ticket.

    Hope this helps!
