Setting Linux files permissions for editing in dashboard (2 posts)

I am running my WordPress site on Ubuntu Linux 13.04. I currently have my site's permissions set as follows:

    Owner <mylocaluseraccount>:www-data

    Directory permissions = 755
    File permissions = 644

What do I need to do in order to be able to edit my site from within the dashboard? Right now, if I try to upload something, like an image, I get "The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2013/12."

If I try to edit something with the editor, I get:

"The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2013/12."

I do not want to open my files to be writable to the "world". Is there something else that I am missing?

    Thank you.

The "User" Ownership of files and directories should also be www-data.

    chown -R www-data:www-data <document root>

Right now the group permission of 4 (the second digit in 644) gives www-data only read permission. So setting www-data as the owner will give it 6 (read(4) + write(2))
