I want to set the roles in my word press so it is a semi private blog. So when someone just goes to the blog there are minimal posts viewable to them until they login. Then based on their login, they will be able to see more of the posts.

IE: Friends would be able to see certain level posts, but family would be able to see more than them.

Is this possible? I tried to setup roles, but just going to my blog with no login you can still read all the entries.

It sounds like you're looking for the ViewLevel plugin's functionality:

I'm pretty sure there's a plugin for this. It sets up private categories that only certain people can read. I was just going through one of the plugins directories today and I believe I saw that in the description. I didn't d/l it so I don't know the nuts and bolts of it. Maybe it will help you out.
