I'm using the Creativix template which has a 'portfolio' page displaying a picture and caption text from posts within a certain category. In 'Theme Settings' I can modify the category which the portfolio page populates from, but I want the portfolio to display certain pages, not certain posts.
Can I either:
Permit pages to have a category ID, or;
Modify portfolio to accept manual input of what to display?
(I'd prefer the former - I thought for a moment that I could simply edit my existing pages and add a category ID to them, but can't see a way of doing that and Google's not been of much help...

No. Pages can't be filed under categories.
Modify portfolio to accept manual input of what to display?
Modifying the portfolio.php template file would be your best option. You could adapt it to pull the children of a specific Page, for example.
