Can someone please help & advise. When I edit a post and then save it or when I try to update a custom field, it takes a considerable amount of time until eventually there is a server timout. Hence it is impossible to conclude such operations. This does not happen on other admin tasks. Any idea?

Try this test: Remove all references listed in Options:Writing Update Services (empty that box)...
