Separating Compares by Categories

Is there any way to extend the YITH WooCommerce Compare feature to only compare between items from the same top-level category?

I have products in different categories with vastly different attributes and I do not want to compare product-cat-a items with product-cat-b items because it gives a long line of attributes, some of which apply to product-cat-a and the rest to product-cat-b.
