SEO and Categories Question (5 posts)

I just put up a new site for my wife who is a Belly Dancer We have 30+ DVDs in various categories, from beginning, advanced, choreography, layering etc. My question is on if I should use a single category say 'belly-dance-dvds' and then tag each one with an appropriate tag, or if I should actually have a sub-category where the structure would be belly-dance-dvds/choreography. What might be best for our old friend the big "G" as it were. For our users the best would be to have the sub categories.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dan

No expert here but the more pages you create the better off you are SEO wise. You create more opportunity for your site to be found.

You could just tag each post with dvd and possibly add tags for beginning, advanced, choreography etc as appropriate. Then add a tag cloud to your site's sitebar to allow visitors to choose which they want. Or create a new DVD category and still add the supplementary tags (except the dvd one, obviously). How many different sub-types of DVD are there? I'd be wary of over-categorising these posts - especially if you're just gong to end up with 3 or 4 posts in some sub-categories. Too much in the way of navigation choice perversely seems to confuse may site users and over complex menu systems definitely put them right off.

Well we cross cateogorize for ease of use.
For example, there will be 3 skill levels, beginning, intermediate and advanced. The minimum number in any category will be four (the beginning category). The largest category is the intermediate with about 12 or 14 and the intermediate-advanced with about 12 as well.
However these could be cross categorized by technique, such as
    1. Foundation
    2. Layering
    3. Drill and Combinations
    4. Soft moves
    5. Sharp Moves

The number in any one of these could be as small as 2 to as many as 4.

Part of what I want to accomplish is an incredibly easy way for users to find the DVD they're looking for and maybe using the tag approach is the best way to go but we do self produce and add a new DVD each month so the number in categories in general will increase. Google Keyword research only shows activity against the "Belly Dance DVD" phrase but the Google Keyword tool is not the end all be all on long tail keywords.
