• hey all

can’t activate a plugin cuz of the Sending Referrers problem.

    yes – i have been to http://codex.wordpress.org/Enable_Sending_Referrers

    things i have tried:
    1. i have modified the about:config referred settings of my firefox 1.0.4
    2. i have tried logging in with IE
    3. i have tried toggling my XP firewall on and off (i have no other firewall software installed)
    4. i have cleared my cookies
    5. i have verified that my browser are sending referrer information with the phpinfo() script

does anyone have any other suggestions i might try? is there a way to turn this “feature” off?

    thanks heaps!

  • Clear cookies (I know you did) and browser cache. Restart your browser. Then try again.

What is the exact error your page is throwing up?

” 2. i have tried logging in with IE”

Did you have the same problem with IE and FF ?
If so, it will be a firewall / security / router / privacy setting somewhere.

Was everything alright and this problem came out of nowhere ? If yes, then what did you update or install onto your computer because that is what caused this.

    hey guys

    >What is the exact error your page is throwing up?

when i try to enable a plugin i receive “Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers for this feature to work.”

yeup. same problem with both browsers, with and without my XP firewall turned on. i have a cable modem going into a router that does my NAT stuff. but surely this is pretty common tech and would be affecting loads of people if that were really the problem?

can’t say whether everything was alright before now since i never tried to install a plugin before.

    thx

If you had deleted any links, you would have seen this message too.

yeah podz, you’re right. i get it for deleting links too.

    Okay – that helps πŸ™‚

Can you list the programs you use ?
I assume XP, Windows firewall …… what else ?

    (@sarahw)

XP SP2, XP firewall (tried in both ON and OFF state)

    free AVG antivirus

    that’s about it.

    s.

How long has you been running your blog ?

I think it’s something that has recently changed in your machine.

    Thread Starter sarahw

    (@sarahw)

been running it 3 months now.

what i don’t get is why the WordPress script can’t seem to see my referrers when the phpinfo() script on the same server can.

    <confused>

If you’ve been running the blog for 3 months, you would have hit this error before. That’s why I think that something in your machine has changed – a program installed, an upgrade, a Windows Update.

What does it say on this line ?
    Where you came from:

hmm.. i’ve never done anything except write posts and publish them with this WP installation to be honest!

    it says: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/37757

Hm…. running out of ideas here πŸ™‚

Seeing as 1.5.1.3 is just out and an upgrade is strongly advised, I would upgrade fully using the directions I wrote here:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/37772#post-213161

We then know that you ARE sending referers and you are using the latest code. And then we’ll scratch our heads again ….

    (@sarahw)

cool – thanks podz. i’ll upgrade now.

    and i do appreciate your head-scratching. :0)
