• Hello! I am new to WP. Could anybody please be so kind and tell me where I can enable sending referrers?
When I try to add a new link I get the following:
Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers, for this feature to work.
I have looked inside the menu but I can’t find where I shall change this.
    Thanks, Nicole

  • but what if not one of those options works?
i have tried the firefox configuration
    the ie configuration
and i still can’t use it.
seriously, it is turning me away from using wordpress as it’s too hard to go and do anything in the sql database and i’m being killed by comment spam.

“but what if not one of those options works?”
If you can tell us what OS / Firewall etc you use, we find the solution.
Then we make that page even better πŸ™‚

    My OS is Windows XP
I don’t use any firewall that I’m aware of, I only have Norton Antivirus 2005. I haven’t installed any firewalls yet as I was not sure what I should be loading.
I purchased my PC and have never been able to load wordpress properly on notsweet.org.
This is extremely odd because i also have wordpress loaded on notsweet.org/musicals (it’s still there even though i’ve moved the site) and i have never had a problem with it

Do you have the (utterly horrendous) XP firewall switched on ?
Are you using IE or Firefox ?

How about Windows Firewall (if you have SP2), or the Firewall that you can activate per connection?

    I use firefox….
Hmmmm this stupid windows firewall is confusing. Yes I have SP2. It says its off, yet its enabled for my internet connection?
I’ve turned it off for my internet connection (I use dialup) and it still comes up with the message and it still doesn’t change the fact I can’t properly use wordpress.

As the page linked above says, this is a security setting for WP, and the thing that needs changing is inside your machine.
First, you need a firewall. They are ‘good things’.
What you do not need however is the one built by Microsoft.
    Download the free Sygate firewall.
Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > OFF (ignore the warnings)
    Install the Sygate Firewall.
(This firewall does not interfere with Sending Referrers)
In Firefox, and maybe IE too, make sure your site is added to any ‘Trusted Zone’.
Anyone else got any suggestions ?

ZoneAlarm free is pretty nice too. I used it for a while, but dumped it for Windows Firewall (SP2) as I don’t use my PC much anymore.

    I am nearly in tears.
I got over 70 spam comments today and no way of controlling them.
I still can’t get wordpress to load properly on my computer, regardless of all the helpful advice you’ve all given.
I think it’ll be easier on me if I switch to another CMS as soon as I can. Blogging is supposed to be fun and this isn’t. I can’t bear logging on again and again and seeing a horrendous amount of spam mail every day.

You’ll get spam no matter what platform you’re using, but good luck regardless. Sorry we couldn’t help.

Do you have Norton Internet Security? because you mention you have the anti-virus.. if you have this then turn off Privacy Control and the Ad Blocker – they cause this problem. It confused me a lot.
The firewall in this package is fine tho, leave it on.

One thing you can do is find someone whio does not have this issue, and trust them for the amount of time it takes to get in, clear the mess and install a couple of plugins. That does not address the underlying issue though.
Something somewhere on your machine is stripping out the referrer data .. have you experienced this with any other site at all that
insists on cookies ? Online banking ? Any secure site ?
It IS solvable, and when the culprit program is found it will just be the simplest of changes.
Apart from Internet Explorer, do you have any other programs running that could affect your internet connection ? As hard as this sounds, we can’t get any more help unless you give us shedloads of info so that we can go search for cures – what things have you tried to sort this out ?

There is no site on my computer that I can think of that insists on cookies. I have no trouble logging onto secure sites such as internet banking. There are no other programs running that affect my internet connection.
On a daily basis I have running:
    Thunderbird
    Firefox
    MSN messenger
    ICQ
    iTunes
    Norton Antivirus 2005
    Windowblinds
    Yahoo Messenger
As I have said before, it is one site that this is a problem on.
On notsweet.org I have two installations of wordpress. I only have problems with one of those installations – I have never had referrer issues with the others!

Are your passwords the same for the installs ?
(Does anyone know more about how cookies are read ?)
