Is it possible to send posts directly to a child/category page?
For example:
On "mysite.com", on the root page (or perhaps mysite.com/index) there is a greeting and links to category pages like /calendar, /history, /news, /technology, etc.
What I would like would be to post something, assign it to a category, and automatically have it added to that page.
This is not really a multi-user thing- this would all be on one domain and with one user.

There may be a terminology issue here. What you are calling categories - the links on your root page, sound more like WordPress static pages than what WordPress calls categories.
You may have created categories with the same names as those pages that you assign to posts. Is that what is going on? And that the posts with those categories are not appearing on the pages that have the same name as the categories?
What WordPress calls a category page would typically have a URL like this http://domain.com/category/history If WP is installed in a folder and not the root, the URL would be
http://domain.com/{install folder}category/history
Try a few of those - for category/news category/technology etc
and see if your posts are coming up
There are ways to make the history posts appear on the history page but before explaining that I want to confirm I understand what you are asking for.
