Self Hosted Server - Wildcard DNS not Allowed (5 posts)

    Hi,

I am setting up an internal Windows Server to host WordPress. I already have two in operation but not using MU.
For this server I want to use MU (sub domains) but am told by our DNS team that we cannot use wildcard dns unless we really have to. They said they could create a separate dns entry pointing to the same IP Address for each sub domain.

My question is... is it OK to do it like this or do you have to use wildcard dns?

    Thanks,

Yes, it's fine :) A pain in the butt, but fine.

Only a pain for the DNS people though?

Well and you. If you make foobar.domain.com before they've done the DNS, it won't work.

They said they could create a separate dns entry pointing to the same IP Address for each sub domain.

which is way more work for them than adding ServerAlias *.yourdomain.com to the vhost on that IP address....

And yeah they can do it that way if they really want to. After a few hundred the wildcard will look great (and be faster).
