seems I can't import (13 posts)

I have two active blogs and I'd like to bring the posts
    http://www.alongshot.blogspot.com/ and http://synapse9.com/blog/

    into my new blog,
    http://www.synapse9.com/signals/

The import options did not let me do that.

The "blogger" plugin returned lots of errors. Is there an alternative?

The "WordPress" plugin asked me to select an RSS file to extract posts from. The two blogs are on the same domain. Is there a shortcut for that situation? What else would I need to do?

You should be able to import using

    http://alongshot.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

    and

    http://synapse9.com/blog/feed/

Blogger imports are notoriously arrrrgh inducing as Blogger changed things on their end. You may be able to trick Blogger by importing to WordPress.com (I know) and then import to your site from WP.com. It's weird, but I know it works.

Those seem to allow me to subscribe, but how do I download the entire blog archive as a file, to then import with the WordPress plugin to bring into my new blog?

I don't know the ropes well enough to know how to import to WordPress.com. Are you saying I should create a new blog and first import the Blogger posts to it, and then from there to mine.

    Yep.

As for the RSS feeds, when you go to import from an RSS feed and it asks what the URL is, you put in the ones I showed you.

I guess I'm a bit daft! Both the RSS and WordPress import tools say:

"Choose a file from your computer: (Maximum size: 2MB) "

    and return error:

"Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number"

    or

"File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini."

    or

where do I find the .WXR file?

    Hah, my bad. Sorry.

    For your WordPress site: http://codex.wordpress.org/Tools_Export_Screen

For Blogger, you could try their built in export and then use this: http://blogger2wordpress.appspot.com/

For the important site I'd want to export, the WP-admin does not contain an Export function. Is there an export plugin for old versions of WordPress. I can't even find what version I have, but it doesn't have a "tools menu" either.

I guess it's around 2004 or something... and having problems. The site host won't support or upgrade it. I've only been able to back up my posts with printing PDF's. Thus the reason for setting up a new blog.

p.s. I tried "Advanced Export for WP & WPMU" 2.8.3
    (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advanced-export-for-wp-wpmu/installation/)

It activated OK but as there's no "tools" menu I couldn't use it.

well, then I found "advanced export", on the Manage tab, but it wasn't functional

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-importer/ is for importing but ... I didn't think there was a WP release that didn't have an export tool! o.O

The site host won't support or upgrade it.

Can YOU upgrade it? I mean, you'd want to do it manually, and step-by-step, but yeah.

Go to the wp-admin dashboard and in the 'right now' section it should tell you your version. If not, scroll down and look at the admin footer.

It was something of a 'custom' version that my host provides as a default application for all user, and can't be upgraded.

I think my fallback is to learn how to use the host's database manager, "phpmyadmin" which will let me export the tables directly from the database. Is there a way to import a CSV file of the posts from the old blog into the new WordPress 3.1.3 ? I adjusted the table from the old blog to have the same headings and ID's higher than the new blog uses. I could also export it as an .xls or an .xml.

Obviously I should be able to just copy data from one table to another, too, but if it can be done with a WordPress tool I'd be happy to do that.

    Well that's an interesting thought.

Obviously I should be able to just copy data from one table to another, too, but if it can be done with a WordPress tool I'd be happy to do that.

Yes, you SHOULD be able to do that. You WILL need to search/replace the old URL for the new one (so look for both http://synapse9.com/blog/ AND just blog, but be VERY careful with the later).

Well, that failed too.. with the exported table not accepted as an import trying all the possible variations, and there not being a way to merge two tables as the host's phpmyadmin tool doesn't have that.

    thanks for the help
