Searchable Database for Cemetery (10 posts)

I am working with a local non-profit group that is restoring a historic mausoleum. They needed a website that was easy to edit for their team and we started with Joomla, but WP seemed to be the way to go in the end, as it is easier to use on the backend. That being said, we had found a plugin for Joomla that allowed us to create a searchable database of all those who are entombed in the mausoleum along with pertinent location data (like 2nd floor, column N, etc). I'm trying to find something similar in WP but no luck so far.

Does anyone know of a plug-in that would allow us to create this searchable area of the website? If it comes down to it, we could create an individual post for each person entombed and then make a page that links by name... but that's a LOT of work. What I'm looking for is maybe something like a contact list manager that has customizable fields for things like location in the building, obituary, photo, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm still fairly new to WP and learning it as I go.

    Thanks!

I have written a plugin called 'cemetariat' for just such a purpose. I haven't started to aggressively market it yet, but if you email me I can send you some screenshots. Also, check out http://www.jeffreycemetery.com/ to see it in action.

That looks exactly like what we are looking for. If you wouldn't mind following up with me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Our domain is GreenLawnAbbey dot org. My email is just my first name brian at that domain. (Sorry for being convoluted, just try to keep spambots in check whenever possible.)

ed, would your plugin work for a list of custom made parts. Each part is listed in a csv file with several original stock numbers as well as the current custom part number.

    Can it import from csv?

It can import from csv - you have to define a mapping between the column names and the order of fields in the csv.

But I am not sure what you mean by parts - the plugin is for managing and displaying data about the deceased in a cemetary plot.

Google keeps bouncing my emails back so I'll ask here...

    1) Are there character limitations on the obituary field or is it set up as a memo? Some of the obits we have get quite lengthy.

    2) How many images can be attached to a record? Ideally, we'd like to have an image of the shutter (the marble faceplate on the crypt) and also an image of the person if we have one provided by the family.

    3) On the "Define location fields" of the backend, I assume we can change names accordingly there. (i.e. area, block, row, could become things like floor, column, vault)

I think that's it for now. So far, I think we are getting interest from the board. I'll let you know soon.

    Thanks for responding Ed.

I was looking for something that could be used to display any items in a sortable list. Weather that was a list of airplane parts, shirt sizes and colors or cemetery plot info.

I found a good flexible solution that is easy to use (after 4 hours of searching), so I thought I would mention it here.

It is the WP Table Reloaded Plugin, available through the WP plugins area.

    Thanks

@WVOz1970 - you can reach me at ed at ed4becky dot org.

    1) it is currently a TEXT field in a MySQL database, which allows 216 characters. Changing it to a higher value would be relatively easy.
    2) One image for the plot (intended to be a map, but could be anything) and unlimited images for the deceased (with the first one assumed to be the headstone). The first one for the deceased is displayed at the top of the web page, the one for the plot is displayed in the plot section ('panel') of the page, and the rest are displayed in a separate panel at the bottom of the page.
    3) The change location page is intended to change the order of and/or hide unused fields. An enhancement would be required to change the names displayed, probably on the options page. These names would then need to be displayed on the edit screens, the web pages, and the search screens. About 4-8 hrs of work. I could do it for an extra $50
