Search query in search bar extended

Hey I recently read this post and followed the instructions and it worked great.

I was hoping to extended the functionality slightly though. On a search results page when I click in the search box the term disappears, how would I keep it there and then be able to add stuff onto the end of it rather than start again from a blank search…
