I wonder about this: is it possibly to have your weblog NOT indexed by search engine robots? I want to set up a blog in a corporate setting and the fear is that everything they say on the weblog will be out on the street.
And can you setup reading AND writing behind a login?
    They don't use an intranet...

    Regards,
    Rob

    Yes.
Googlebots respects robots.txt - head into Google's Help section for info and links. (Others do not btw)

And behind a login ? Yes to that too - go read up on .htaccess and .htpasswd:

Not all SEs respect robots.txt. If the weblog is posted on a server open to the internet, there is a very high probability it will become public. If there is a legitimate concern for privacy and confidentiality, then they had best find a more secure solution.

Intranet would likely be the better way to go.
