[resolved] Search by subcategory (14 posts)

    Hi,
I would like to know in advance before installing the plugin whether the following workflow is supported when searching for a listing: The search form shows 2 search boxes: One for categories and the other for subcategories. The user selects a category and then the subcategory box dynamically displays the subcategories of the selected category. Then the user selects the subcategory.

Also, is there a limit to the number of subcategory levels?

    HI dorifr,

Yes, we support that workflow using the Enhanced Categories module (which is free--just contact me to get it: http://businessdirectoryplugin.com/contact/). There's no limit to subcategories from a BD perspective, but practically speaking, you should probably keep it simple otherwise your users will get easily frustrated and not use your site because of deep taxonomies. That's been my experience with other users in the past, FWIW.

    Hi,
I installed the plugin that you sent me, however I still don't know how to create the workflow. Specifically how to create two dropdowns, one for categories and one for their subcategories where the second dropdown is dynamically populated depending on the category selected in the first dropdown. The plugin offers only one dropdown for categories and subcategories.

I'll be glad if you could point me to the right direction in implementing the workflow.
    Thanks
    Dori.

    Hi dorifr,

Sorry that wasn't more clear. Try the documentation on it here: http://businessdirectoryplugin.com/docs/#premium-categories

There's a setting where you can set "Parent + Child" (the default behavior) and then "Parent Only" which creates the 2-dropdown structure you're looking for. I believe that will fix it.

I changes the behavior to Parent Only but still it seems to me that there will be a lot of hacking involved in converting the current layout of links into a dropdown configuration.

As far as I understand it requires a deep knowledge of php programming and a very good understanding of how the plugin is working. Or maybe I'm missing something and its not that complicated?

When you said the the plugin supports the workflow did you mean that there is this amount of hacking that needs to be done to achieve it? Or is there a shortcut which I don't see?

To get the 2-level category navigation, it should only require the change to that setting. Perhaps I'm not understanding what you're trying to do here or what you're seeing.

Can you show me screenshots of what you see?

What page(s) are you expecting to see the category navigation on and aren't even with the setting on?

I'm not trying to navigate to the listings, I'm trying to get to them as search results.
The dropdown boxes are search boxes on a search form.
    The workflow is as follows:

    1. Select the category in the first dropdown list box.
    * The second dropdown box automatically gets populated with the subcategories of the category selected in step 1.
    2. Select the subcategory in the second dropdown box.
    3. Click Submit.
    * The listings which belong to the subcategory selected are displayed as search results in the search results list.

Sorry for not being clear enough in my original posting.

    Hi Dori,

That makes sense, sounds like this is on the search screen. Our demo (which has the Parent ONLY enabled) shows this: http://businessdirectoryplugin.com/business-directory/?action=search

Sounds like you want the same 2-dropdown effect that you get on Submit Listing with search, is that correct?

    Good Morning!
That is correct. The difference between the demo and what I need is that I need two separate dropdowns. Category and Subcategory where the second is dynamic and dependent on the first.

I can't settle for one dropdown that shows both category and subcategory in one hierarchy. This is because the hierarchy we have includes only a few categories where each category contains many subcategories.

My question is how to split the one inclusive dropdown you have on the advanced search screen into two exclusive ones-one for categories and the second for their subactegories.
    Thanks
    Dori

I have an idea on how to fix this--our enhanced category module should add this feature anyhow, since we do it elsewhere (consistency and all!) Contact me here, let's work it out and I'll get you the change you need: http://businessdirectoryplugin.com/contact/
