Is there any hope for me getting this to work?

Found the problem with this one. Apparently the PHP.ini file had a setting for Magic_quotes_runtime = on it should be off. Changing this fixed all the issues. Whew, what a relief.

php.ini is not part of the wordpress installation - its part of the php configuration and its location depends on the host - ask your hosting provider for its location
