Screen options and Editing ondrop down in posts

Thank you for your response and I appreciate your willingness to help me. What it was that prevented me to function was a conflict with a plugin that evidently was not compatible with WordPress. I was a social media plugin, I disengaged it and all is fine, forgot which one but had no useful function as I use a floating place holder on the site.
