• Since upgrading to 3.2, I have been getting an artifact on my screen which consists of a white rectangle about the size of the little search box at the top of this WP page. It only comes up after I start writing a new article. I use Atahualpa and have 14 plugins, very common ones. I have updated them as required.

Does anyone have any clue why I have this artifact on my screen? It is only in the WP admin program.

Well, you won’t be able to see it on the web site, it only shows up in the admin area. If I could post a snip here I could show it to you, but I can’t. So pretend there is a little square white rectangle fixed in place on your screen.

    So pretend

I stopped that about 55 years ago.

If you use FF, you can use FireBug to figure out where it is coming from. With IE9 and deleloper tools, there is a setting “find” where you can point to a object and see where the code is coming from.

I use Chrome. I’ll see what they have. Good tip, thanks. Hey, I’m old but I pretend yet.

I’m having the same problem after upgrading. It only occurs within WordPress and makes it hard to load graphics because it covers the button for choosing the file name of the graphic to load. I can provide a screen capture, but I don’t see how to load one here. This seems to be a perennial problem that is usually solved by changing your desktop graphic to anything else, then changing it back again. That’s not helping here. Ideas?

It doesn’t seem to be present when using Firefox, but it is when using Chrome.

The easiest way to duplicate the problem in WordPress 3.2.1 is to create a new post and go through the process of inserting a graphic. When the screen shades out in this process, you can see the white rectangle. This only occurs using Chrome as the browser, and only in the “behind the scenes” admin area of WordPress.

I still have the damned thing. It’s mostly annoying. Like you, I saw it on Chrome only when WP went to 3.2.1. I would guess that it will remain in WP in the next versions and that we’ll either have to ditch Chrome or see if they get rid of it in their next version.

If you Google “white rectangle in middle of screen” you’ll see this is a recurring problem for Windows computers. When I tried to use Firebug in Firefox to check out the problem, I found no white rectangle. So it has to do with the interaction of Chrome, the WordPress 3.2.1 admin area and Windows. I’m using Windows Vista. Perhaps the people who usually answer questions can’t duplicate the problem because they are using Macs with Safari or Firefox. Maybe the temporary solution is to use Firefox when I want to access my blog’s WordPress admin area.

I just upgraded two sites to WP 3.3.1 and now have the same artifact showing up on both sites. One one site, it’s a large rectangular box on a post (theme: Newsport). On the other site it’s two boxes stuck together, like a table, on pages (theme: Atahualpa). Other posts and pages on both sites are fine.

When I use Firebug, I can locate the line of code and delete it, which solves the problem in rehearsal, but of course those Firebug corrections can’t be saved (or at least I don’t know how they can). I don’t know how to get to the code and correct it for real. Can anyone help?
