• Hi,

I’ve just finished this website for my school:

    NSHS Et Cetera Online

It’s for my school’s new online magazine (student publication). This is the best way to make this magazine work, I think. If you have a better way, please suggest it to me.

Also, please tell me how I could make the website better look. Any suggestions and comments are welcomed.

    Thanks very much! 😀

  • I really like it. Simple, but puts a lot of content out front.

If I were to suggest any changes, I might make some of the excerpt text (in the colored boxes) a little less cluttery. The headlines bump into the topic title, which is kind of a fun look, but since they’re the same color, it clashes a little.

I may also suggest author names in those excerpt boxes, and more of a description (“teaser”) instead of just the first XX words of the article.

Though I really do think it looks great right now.

thanks! Yeah, the teaser thing bugs me, but I have no idea how to do any of that.

The other thing is that it looks find in Firefox, but not in IE, which is a problem. Any help?

I see what you’re saying, and it does look much better in Firefox. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what would cause it to be so much different between the two, though it’s apparently something in the <h3>, or maybe tag that’s doing it.

I noticed you’re using the recycled canvas deal, and I was wondering how you did those different color boxes for the categories (really nice looking by the way).

Yeah I based the theme off of the recycled canvas theme because it has the box-look, which really was similar to how an online magazine show look like. So I just manipulated the code by adding some CSS tags to it. So when I added an article to a certain category, it would make it so that a certain color shows up.

When I am completely done with this, I will try to give you a look at the code

I gotta admit that I’m trying to figure out the links along the top. I’m guessing category pages?

Yea. They are. I thought that it would be easier, since this is an online magazine, to put the sections on top. This way, people don’t have to look all over for each of the sections.

BTW, does anyone know what happened to the TECH&Gaming section? Because for some reason, it’s like gone. Yikes! idk what happened to it.

I just completed a magazine site which you might want to take a look at. It’s a magazine for discussions and news of Asian Architecture. So it is updated daily with news snippets while more indepth articles are updated weekly. Hope it helps.

    Hi Chenz,
    Let me be straight.
Your site theme is too dark, besides, the large picture on the first page doesn’t invite to read, it is too large.
In my opinion, your site may look better if you make next changes:
    – simply choose another theme
    – or add additional color to the website to make it 3 colored, that’s a minimum standard for a good design.
    – remove the large picture on the front page/ make it smaller.

That’s three main things to focus on.
Here is to compare my new school related website, it runs on drupal, may not be as serious as yours, but looks much alive 🙂 Back to school guide.
