I have 2 WP test installs where Backup 2.01 is installed. Both backup to my google drive in different folders. Backup is scheduled daily on both installs.
I checked my google drive and noticed both folders were missing backups of several days. I logged in to one of the WP sites and went to backup settings to check if daily was still selected. It was. Returning to google drive I saw a fresh backup was made.
Next I logged in to the other WP site and kept an eye on the backup process in wp-content/backup via ftp to see when exactly the backup starts. It starts directly upon entering the backup settings page. Seems to me that without entering the settings page, no scheduled backup is performed.

Is this a bug or a feature?

  • Anyone visiting your site should trigger the backup. How much traffic do you get to your site?

These are just test sites, not meant for any traffic. So you say any visit triggers a backup? Or does it take at least one visit to trigger the scheduled backup later on that day or week or month? This is another feature than the one I described here (visiting the settings page triggers an immediate backup). Is this right? And if so, why? I think I would prefer that visiting the settings page does not trigger an immediate backup, and that the scheduled backups are performed regardless of the traffic.

OK, let me explain how the WordPress scheduling system works by using an example.

Say you have scheduled a daily backup at 13:30. Every time someone visits your site, WP checks if the current time is past the scheduled time of the event. If this is the case it then triggers the scheduled event (the backup) and then schedules another backup for the next day at the same time.

If there is no one visiting the site until say 16:00, then the backup will only get triggered at 16:00. If there is no one visiting your site at all, then there will be no backups.

In order to have backups done at precise times and without depending on traffic you will have to schedule a UNIX cron job. This is what the manual backup URL is for. This is a relatively easy thing to set up, but if you need assistance please get in touch with me privately.
